Although population growth and increased prosperity increase the demand  for drinking water, groundwater and surface water resources are limited and are declining, among other causes, due to overexploitation of the resource and the climate change.

Seawater desalination appears to be the answer for coastal communities or locations with salty aquifers. But in most desalination methods. the environmental impacts are high and the cost is not easily accessible. In other words, the water supply is not sustainable.
